


The Nestorians were a Christian sect named after Bishop Nestorius, a heretic excommunicated by the council of Ephesus in 431. After contracting typhus fever, Stoddard was buried at West Azerbaijan, Iran, but has a memorial in Northampton, MA. He used his knowledge of astronomy and telescopes as a way to connect with people. He learned Syriac, preached, instructed in schools, and visited from house to house. After being invited to the Nestorian mission by Rev. He was educated at Yale and proficient in the natural sciences, but decided to be a preacher. Stoddard (1819–1857) was born at Northampton, Massachusetts to the illustrious family of Solomon Stoddard and Sarah Tappan.
